Lunar eclipse 2011 Images

Century's longest and darkest lunar eclipse

The moon's bright white glow turned crimson brick red when it delved into the dark centre of the earth's shadow during the century's longest and darkest lunar eclipse on Wednesday night.

The awesome spectacle was visible all over the country, including the national capital.

The full moon appeared much dimmer than usual, but sunlight passing through the earth's atmosphere gave the lunar surface a deep reddish hue.

This was the century's longest and darkest total lunar eclipse as the moon immersed deeply inside the umbral (darker) shadow of the earth, Nehru Planetarium Director N. Rathnasree told PTI.

The total phase lasted 100 minutes. The last eclipse to exceed this duration was in July 2000.

The next such eclipse will only take place in 2141.

The penumbral lunar eclipse began at 22:54:34 IST and will end at 04:30:45 IST (on Thursday), she said.

The total lunar eclipse began at 00:52:30 IST and will end at 02:32:42 IST, while the partial eclipse began at 23:52:56 IST and end at 03:32:15 IST.

As the earth came in between the sun and the moon, its shadow first began sweeping across the moon, blocking out much of its bright light and as the shadow descended gently, the moon's face turned red.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth, in the course of its orbit around the sun, comes between the moon and sun in such a way that the moon is hidden in the shadow cast by the earth.

This can occur only when the sun, earth, and the moon are aligned in a straight line, C.B. Devgun from the Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) said.

Lookout integrates 'safe browsing' on Android

Socially engineered threats remain a major security concern on mobile devices, so to help protect its users Lookout Mobile Security (download) has added "safe browsing" to its premium version today at no extra cost. Safe browsing checks links you tap before they load in your device's Web browser to make sure they don't lead to phishing scams or malware.
Safe browsing is not quite widely available yet on mobile devices, even though it potentially can threaten mobile device users as easily as it does people using laptops and desktops. In an interview last week at CNET's San Francisco office, Lookout's Chief Technology Officer Kevin Mahaffey discussed what he thinks are the next big mobile security problems. "The two things we saw coming were drive-by downloads and exploits on Web sites. Since almost all web browsing on mobile is done with Webkit, Webkit exploits will affect almost everybody," he said. Webkit is the underlying rendering engine that powers the default mobile browser on iOS, most of the mobile browsers including the default on Android, as well as Google Chrome and Apple Safari on the desktop.
Lookout's Safe Browsing shows up as a new option on its main screen. Tapping it only reveals a brief description about the feature because it's designed to be baked right into the main interface, said Anbu Anbalagapandian, a senior software engineer at Lookout. "As Steve Jobs says, it just works," she added.
When you click on a link from within any app, Lookout will detect your browser opening and then check where the link is going to before the page loads. If the Web site is safe, Lookout will show a message stating as much in the notifications window. You won't see it unless you pull down the notifications window immediately after tapping a link.
If a malicious link is detected, Safe Browsing asks you if you'd like to Block the site or Proceed Anyway. In brief testing, Lookout's Safe Browsing successfully blocked the browser from loading five known malicious sites.
To get the update, either install the app and upgrade to the premium version, or update your current installation of Lookout. It is also available during the app's trial period. While adding the feature to Lookout isn't going to change the face of mobile security, safe browsing is absolutely a smart feature to include in any mobile security app.

5 Things To Look For Before Buying A Digicam

While buying a camera for yourself, there are a certain things you need to know about cameras. Despite the advancements in the field of photography, the basics remain the same.

1. Resolution Is Not What You Think

A major misconception about the quality of pictures is that the more megapixels lead to a better picture. This is not always true.

Higher resolution pictures do give an advantage of cropping a picture and also to print high resolution large pictures, but even a normal camera these days gives you an adequate clarity and range. The question to ask yourself while looking for the resolution of the camera is, "how large will the photos I will print?" A normal 5-6 megapixel camera is all you need if you are an occasional photographer. This way you will even save more space on your memory card.

2. Camera Is Not All You Require

Apart from the camera, other stuff relating to it like the memory card, Lenses (if you are buying a DSLR), spare Batteries/ AA batteries, lens attachments etc.

Usually the extras you buy are not inclusive within the camera price. A retailer comes with a bundled price for the entire extras, but you will have to choose which suits your camera the best.

For example, a Digital camera may or may not use AA-size battery. AA-size batteries are preferable, if you are a traveller and love exploring rugged and rustic locales and usually need more battery power. AA-size Alkaline batteries like Duracell provide more power back-up than usual rechargeable cells and last up to 10 times longer than super heavy duty batteries.

When your AA-size battery runs out of power, you can simply replace them with another set of AA-size battery. This is not possible for a camera which runs on rechargeable cells, once the battery runs out of power; you'll have to recharge them by plugging into a power cord to recharge it. You will not face the hassles of recharging it or find a power outlet to recharge your batteries.

Duracell AA-size batteries can also be used for your other gadgets.

3. DSLR Or SLR Camera

Digital SLRs are not so cheap but are affordable but are not for everyone. They are usually bigger in size, need to change camera lenses and are complicated than point and shoot cameras. If you still wish to buy a DSLR camera, better go for a DSLR which uses AA-size battery power.

4. Check How Big A Photo Can Be Zoomed

Cameras come with either optical zoom or digital zoom.
Digital zoom only enlarges the picture keeping the same number of pixels; this often leads to pixelated pictures.

An optical zoom makes your object look bigger without pixelating the picture. Always go for a camera which provides optical zoom which varies from 3x-12x Optical zoom.

These are only some major things you need to look in a camera before buying it. There are other details which have to be dealt with but are not important as these factors are.

5. Do Some Basic Research

All companies want to promote the cameras they make. Don't fall for promotions. Read reviews, consult experts and choose the best that suits you in terms of budget and usage.

Apple to pay Nokia for every iPhone sold

Nokia did not disclose financial terms of the settlement but said the agreement would have a
"positive financial impact" on Nokia's second-quarter results.

The settlement comes at a time when Nokia needed a boost. Nokia had its debt rating cut to the lowest investment grade from Fitch just last week, has lost its market dominance to Apple and Android-running devices, and is undergoing a painful transition to a new operating system.

The agreement settles all outstanding patent litigation between the two. The companies also agreed to withdraw complaints against each other with the International Trade Commission over the use of intellectual property.

Nokia, has been in the handheld business earlier than Nokia, had claimed that Apple's iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet infringed on its patents. Nokia said its pioneering innovations are being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the areas of multi-tasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.

"We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees," said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia, in a June 14 statement. "This settlement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market."

"Apple and Nokia have agreed to drop all of our current lawsuits and enter into a license covering some of each other's patents, but not the majority of the innovation that makes the iPhone unique," the Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said.

Bloomberg News relates Sami Sarkamies, an analyst at Nordea Bank AB in Helsinki, said in a note to clients the initial payment will likely be in the range of hundreds of millions of euros related to about 200 million Apple devices delivered to date.

According to the Financial Post, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky estimates royalty rates of approximately 0.75% to 1.5% per iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch shipped globally. That may equate to a payment between US$800-million and US$1.6-billion in the third quarter.

Transition stage for Nokia

Nokia four years ago sold more mobile phones than all the other handset-makers combined. From a 50% market share, Nokia phones are now only being bought by one out four cellphone users, as smartphones run by Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhones continue to gain following.

Nokia said several weeks ago that it might not book a profit in its core cellphone business for the second quarter.
Nokia Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop is readying a line of phones based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system to replace the Symbian line. However, Nokia has received an added pressure as the new batch of phones products are only expected to be in place well into 2012, and issues remain whether consumers will embrace the Windows-based devices.

Windows-based smartphones have yet to gain following. Google's Android system, has already grown to become the largest smartphone operating system with 36 percent of units sold in the first quarter, compared to only 27.4% for the Symbian, and 3.6% for Windows-based devices, according research firm Gartner Inc.

In April Nokia announced that it would transfer its Symbian software activities, including about 3,000 employees, to Accenture. In addition, Nokia also said it plans to reduce its global workforce by about 4,000 employees by the end of 2012, with the majority of reductions in Denmark, Finland and the UK.

"Strategy transitions are difficult. We recognize the need to deliver great mobile products, and therefore we must accelerate the pace of our transition," said Nokia's CEO said in April. "Our teams are aligned, and we have increased confidence that we will ship our first Nokia product with Windows Phone in the fourth quarter 2011."

Monetizing from IPR

Nokia for now could focus on monetizing on its arsenal of patents.

Nokia said that during the last two decades, it has invested EUR43 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families.

Nokia could push harder to secure licensing and royalty income from new entrants in the smartphone market, Rod Hall, an analyst at J.P.Morgan, said in a research note, according to reporting by the Financial Post. "The patent license agreement with Apple highlights the strength and breadth of Nokia's patent portfolio in the wireless communications market," Hall said.

The outcome of the Apple-Nokia dispute could also have major implications for Google's Android operating system and the manufacturers using it because Android and Apple's mobile software are similar, meaning Android may also be using many of the same technologies in question, Florian Muller, an intellectual-property consultant in Starnberg, Germany, told the Wall Street Journal.

Nokia will release its second quarter results on July 21, 2011.
